Subject:  On Recent Events in Iran
 

Dear friends,

Protest by the people continue in Tehran and a few other cities. More than
1,000 -- mostly young men and women -- have been imprisoned. The coercive
apparatuses of the fundamentalist regime and the plain-cloths extreme
right-wing vigilante thugs [Ansar-e Hezbollah] continue to brutally beat up
the protestors, but no protestor has been killed by the regime.

The fundamentalist regime appears very nervous since the Sept 11 terrorist
attacks. According to several sources, the regime has withdrawn several
thousand of the Pasdaran [Islamic Revolutionary Guards] from Lebanon and
Bosnia. According to another report, Imad Moghnieh, one the 22 Most Wanted
terrorist by the FBI, left Iran a few weeks ago. Moghnieh is the 2ndhighest
ranked leader of Lebanese Hezbollah and the mastermind of several terrorist

The most significant re-alignment of post-Sept 11 is the Chinese getting
close to the US and the concomitant moving away from the IRI. Although the
Russians have started a very close cooperation with the US, they have not
abandoned their collaboration with fundamentalist regime in Iran. The same
seems to be the case with India and Pakistan.

The fundamentalist regime ruling Iran seems very nervous. They fear that
unstable regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq may soon be replaced with pro-US
regimes. This would be in addition to pro-US regimes in Turkey, Tajikistan,
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, Oman all of whom circle the borders of
Iran. Moreover, the main terrorist groups such as Lebanese Hezbollah and
Palestinian Islamic Jihad were formed by the IRI and get almost all their
funding from the IRI. The IRI elites are facing the dilemma of either
abandoning their terrorist creations (that they had spend billions of dollars
on and had invested enormous ideological capital) or remaining faithful to
their terrorist policies (and risking further isolation and perhaps military
attacks). The IRI has shared some intelligence on Taliban with the US and
its Ambassador to the UN met with several American lawmakers. The IRI wants
to reduce American hostility to it at the same time that it wants to continue
to support its puppet terrorist groups (Lebanese Hezbollah, and PIJ).

These are perilous times for the religious fascist rulers in Tehran. The
fundamentalists fear a mass uprising like the July 1999 uprising [mostly by
middle class students, intellectuals, and groups] coinciding with the urban
riots in working class districts that have occurred in IslamShah, Mashhad,
Isfehan, Abadan, and Sanandaj.

After 23 years of utter repression, the people have had it with the
reactionary economic, cultural, social, and political policies of the
fundamentalist tyrants. In the next few weeks, months and 2- 3 years we
should witness numerous uprisings and riots by the brave people of Iran. The
Iranian society is ready for a mass social explosion. What it needs, perhaps
is a trigger such as a massacre by the IRI regime to set off the explosion.
