SMCCDI (Public Statement)
November 27, 2002
Fellow struggling students,
As it was predicted and expected, waves of arrests of
activists of the Student Movement have begun following the
recent students' demonstrations. At this time, the
"leader" of the Islamic Republic regime has sent his savage
mercenary plainclothes agents against members of the
"daftar Tahkim Vahdat" (Office of Consolidation Unity) due
to his fear of the students’ force and
demonstrations.
It shall be noted that, one of the principal and most
important segments of the so-called "reformists" movement
are the "Etehadi e Anjoman ha ye Eslami Daneshjooyan"
(United Moslem Students Associations) and the Office of
Consolidation Unity (OCU); As it must be pointed out that
these entities have always attempted to act as brakes by
hoping to slow the storming waves of the student movement
from reaching its real political demands, as well as trying
to put the movement in line within the bankrupted reformist
camp.
From the beginning of the students’ demonstration, on
18 Tir 1378 (July 9, 1999), these "religious" student
organizations have been the main supporters of Khatami and
his policies by calling for a "calm and none-active
environment" in the universities. These organizations have
constantly tried to discourage the students from reaching
their true aspirations and goals. In which, we can
translate their policy to a passive and none-threatening
movement to the Islamic system.
When the Student Movement was about to become a mass
movement, the leadership of these organizations urged and
announced that the protest actions were over in order put a
stop to future mass demonstrations. Most political
observers believe that these organizations have nothing as
assets in four years of student activism. As we know, Ali
Afshari, a well-known OCU member, is still languishing in
prison and other students are joining his fate as the
result of each action. At the same time, these so-called
Students Associations keep asking students for a calm and
"civil" environment. But these so-called student entities
are now sharing the same fate as the so-called "reformist"
movement, which due to its weak nature and un-ability to
fight the ruling "Hezbollah" Mafia, has reached a dead-end
and is subject to internal fights and splits.
It is a known fact that the university students have always
been feared and hated by the founders of the Islamic regime
who closed the Universities and have sent their agents as
students for controlling and spying. The "religious"
student bodies were created as well, in order to canalize
and control the student movement. But these steps have
failed and could not stop students from demanding a
democratic and secular system.
Indeed, the students have started to form their own
individual and separate chapters of activism from these
pro-regime entities and without paying any attention to the
repeated calls for a calm environment. The students have
called for freedom of all political prisoners and a
referendum for a new political system.
The "Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy
for Iran," is requesting from every activist and freedom
lover in the world to support the Iranian students with all
of their power, and to mobilize a collective effort in
order to force all international institutions and
organizations to put a stop to the Islamic regime's
policies of harassment, intimidation, and imprisonment of
the Iranian students. This Committee invites you, as the
anniversary of 16 Azar (Student Day on December 7th) is
approaching, a day belonging to the history of the student
movement in Iran, to be heard one more time, with a strong
and loud message to the attention of the international
community that the Iranian people want a democratic and
secular system based on a national referendum.
Long Live Freedom!
Long Live Secularism!
