Your Excellency
I am
extremely concerned by today's news that Iran plans to stone two women: Ferdows
B. and Sima. I believe that death by stoning is particularly hideous and surely
violates Iran's obligation not to inflict inhumane or degrading treatment on
prisoners.
I understand the need for Iran to maintain law and order in society and Iranian
officials' efforts to support Islam, but I respectfully ask your prompt and
compassionate intervention on behalf of Ferdows B and Sima. Personally, I cannot
comprehend the horror of stoning and plead with authorities to abolish this
practice in Iran.
I believe that justice demands that the lives of both Sima and Ferdows B be
spared and that no one in Iran or anywhere should suffer the agony of death by
stoning. I believe it is imperative that clear-minded leaders in Iran call a
halt to a practice that brutalizes and traumatizes all particpants, their
families, and the general public.
